About Me

Hello and a warm welcome.    I’m Karen Johnson and I’m a qualified experienced accredited Counsellor based in Milton Keynes.

Sometimes it can be helpful to know a little bit about someone before you reach out and that’s understandable and perfectly normal.  We wouldn’t buy a car without researching it fully and giving it a quick test drive first!

Here is a little bit about me.

I decided to become a counsellor after 27 years in a particularly stressful corporate environment.  As much as I loved my job I always felt I wanted to find a more fulfilling career in helping others, something I’m truly passionate about.   The stress in my job took its toll and I found myself struggling with many challenges such as lack of confidence, anxiety and stress.  I had been running on empty for some time, putting others needs before my own because I felt guilty in putting my own needs first.  Something I think we are all guilty doing because we feel we don’t deserve to think about ourselves when we have families to care for, or unexpected circumstances mean we have to put our own needs aside.

A well meaning friend suggested some counselling to help me make sense of what was happening in my life.  My first thought was “I’m not in crisis why would I need a counsellor” but after reaching out and finding the most wonderful counsellor I began to see the true benefit of being able to work through some of my challenges. develop some resilience, and most importantly improve my mental health and wellbeing.  That was over five years ago and it honestly was the best investment I made in myself and gave me some real clarity on how I wanted to spend my life.   How often do you take the time to invest in you?

Seeking help with counselling is a perfectly normal thing to do however it can feel like a bit unfamiliar leap to make and I understand that committing to it takes courage.  Some words of comfort for you, counselling can and does help you gain some perspective on your life, it helps you build some coping skills, it helps you understand yourself better, it helps you identify what you need and how to go about ensuring those needs are met in a way that works for you.

A counsellor is someone who is understanding, compassionate, non-judgemental, and genuinely interested in helping you feel better about yourself and accepting yourself just as you are.

My promise to you is helping support you in making sense of what is happening in your life and help you to see things in a different way: I will listen carefully to you without judgment or interruption. I will help you to explore your feelings and provide the time to think about yourself and for yourself.  I will provide a safe supportive environment respecting your values, lifestyle, background and beliefs.

Being able to talk can make you feel less alone and perhaps for the first time feel like someone is truly listening to you and understanding your situation and helping you find ways to achieve your goals which simply may be to feel better about things.

I have experience of working with a variety of challenges, anxiety, panic attacks, self esteem, confidence and depression/feeling sad for both men and women.  I currently volunteer with CarersMK in Milton Keynes as a counsellor providing much needed support for unpaid carers who have found themselves having to take care of a loved one unexpectedly. So have a lot of experience and a specific interest in helping clients in this area.

It’s important that you feel comfortable with your therapist and feel like you are in safe hands, so I offer a free, no obligation, 20 minute consultation so you can see if you feel happy to work with me.  I look forward to speaking to you soon.

Let’s work together to help you lead a more happy and fulfilling life.

Warmest wishes and kindness,

Karen.

What some of my clients say

I luckily found Karen while going through a difficult time, from the first session she gave me ways to start thinking positively and gave me different processes to help keep anxiety down. Through being able to talk to Karen openly I was able to work out what was causing my anxiety which was a big help in turning things around. I would recommend Karen at Mind Calm to anybody who feels they could benefit from therapy.

Karen really stepped in at a time when I saw no way out – she really helped me slow life down and realise I need to enjoy the little things in life.  I really appreciate everything  Karen has helped me work through and see from a different perspective, encouraging me to explore my own solutions and build my confidence and self esteem in the process.    Karen is kind, patient, and demonstrates such empathy and understanding, anyone would be lucky to have her help them in their time of need.

I have seen hypnotherapists before but was really stands out for me about Karen is how she entwines NLP into the hypnotherapy to ensure that the sessions are tailored specifically for her clients.  It is clear that Karen is very passionate about helping people and I really like her compassionate approach.  I would highly recommend Karen.

I am the biggest of sceptics, so after an initial chat with Karen, I wanted to give hypnotherapy a try in relation to my unhealthy eating habits. I was very much on the fence as to wether it works but Karen put me at ease. I booked in with Karen for my first session. I relaxed into the   talk, listening to Karen’s calming voice. I still didn’t think it would work but I can truthfully say that I was well and truly submerged in the experience. As a result, I have curbed some of my bad eating habits and just don’t fancy particular foods. I am shocked at how effective the whole experience was and I actively recommend Karen’s services. A great experience.
